Chapter 7
Imagination
Target Practice
I will spend twenty minutes to one half hour each day connecting with my soul while doing some form of exercise. I will start this activity immediately.
What I will do tomorrow is to take a walk.
My problem for this Chapter is my weight.
The question is, Have I balanced my behaviors in relationship to being overweight? Clearly not.
What behaviors am I using now to solve the problem?
AVOIDANCE.
I also use excuses such as: I am too busy to exercise or I am too tired to exercise.
Here are the solutions I came up with in my brainstorming:
Park further away
Say and follow through on "Unless I walk, I can't eat.
Visit individual office suites instead of sending e-mails to people whenever possible.
Get life cycle fixed and start using it.
Combine connecting with my spouse time with a walk.
Do yard work and get those leaves picked up
Get a dog or walk a dog
Join a dance class
Have a contest lifting weights with my son
Go for a hike
Find scenic bike paths and go for a ride
research kid friendly hikes
walk to meetings or library
Figure out why/how I got there to begin with to avoid those situations
Of these brainstorming ideas, which ones would cover all the categories of fun, love, freedom and power?
Both figuring out the why/how and I deciding on "connecting with spouse and walking" along with "no food" until that has been done.
How would the person I want to be handle this situation?
First off, it wouldn't be an odious task - it would have to be fun, so I would want to do it again. Secondly, it would involve some family time because I have so little of it lately. Then it wouldn't have to be so time consuming that I couldn't do it. The picture of Snow White singing "With a smile and a song...." comes to mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQZ6zzLpoNQ
The person I admire wants to be more fit and in the process lose weight.
The action I will take to handle the situation the way I want is to ask my husband and /or my son if they would meet me at the track on our way home from work to walk.
It wasn't so hard, I did that this morning and got an OKAY!

Kris,
Good luck! I know how hard it is to find time and motivation to workout. I make excuses just as much as the next person. This time of year only makes it worse because I am a GIANT woos & don't want to do much outside when it gets cold. However, I do have access to indoor sites; I just have to get there and do what needs done.
I hope you find success in losing weight as well as connecting with your family and stayng in shape. There are some great rewards built into all of those goals.
ENJOY!
On a personal note, Kris, I spend a great deal of time plugged in to this computer screen for work. Perhaps you do the same? My saving grace on so many fronts is having two dogs. Mine, the border collie, absolutely must be run on a regular basis. We have a public park a few miles from home with several hundred acres of mountain bike trails through the woods and a lovely stream.
We're supposed to keep dogs on leashes there, but just try exercising a high energy dog on a leash. The happy news is that my new husband's dog, the blonde lab, has lost substantial weight and gotten much happier with her regular exercise chasing around after the lightning quick collie.
Taking the dogs for a walk is sometimes a solitary pursuit, but it is the primo couple event for us too. There's nothing that can't be talked about and sorted out while walking the trails together. I can walk faster if I'm angry, or slower if I'm reveling in the beauty of the changing seasons.
We talk about the kids, our communication blocks, what we plan to do with our businesses, anything. While I'm not sure I'm recommending that you get a dog, I am encouraging you to go with your spouse to exercise. It can be very high quality time.
Kris,
I admire you for posting this. We, women, have a hard time talking about our "looks" sometimes. You can do it. I was not happy with myself at the end of the summer and decided that I was going to get a personal trainer to assist me in my goals. My major goal at the time was to be able to pass the CPAT test for firefighting so that if I I ever wanted to go that route I have the ability to apply, pass the test, interview, and be hired. Instead of apply, cry about not being able to pass the test, take pitty on myself, and not get an interview.
I am halfway through my sessions with him now, I don't look any different, in my opinion, however, I feel GREAT and that makes me want to LOOK better when I get dressed in the morning.
The hardest part of starting to work out when you haven't in a while is motivation. Well you have two great motivators and both of them are part of your family. Additionally, like Professor McDade said, a dog will MAKE you walk.
Good luck
